In His Own Words

About him

The things people ask you can be most revealing. The question I've been asked most often in recent years is: "Why did you walk across Africa solo from coast to coast?” But that takes quite a while to explain. And I digress, in all the excitement . . .

Why get to know me? I guess I'm quite funny and irreverent and adventurous and creative. As an author and lecturer I can string a few words together beyond contented grunts, and I'm not emotionally dense.

I like travel (in over 50 countries), adventure, bespoke suits, books, history, hand-made shoes, movies, good food, good company, good music . . .

Oh hell, this sounds like every other profile. That won't do.

OK, random stuff about me:

FAVOURITE INSTRUMENT: Piano. I used to play Satie with as much panache as a chimpanzee playing Hamlet. (This shouldn't be construed as a chimpist remark.)

FAVOURITE FOODS: Tesco Basics tinned chocolate sponge pudding, rich and mysterious as deepest Congo mudflats, dark and sultry as a Persian night – truly the sponge of sin . . . Or Asda Economy tinned fruit sponge pudding, its golden leopard-pelt studded with luscious raisins from sun-drenched Tuscan vineyards . . . For the discerning dinner guest I'd serve "Soupe à la tomate rapide" (Emergency Tomato Soup – 3 parts boiling water to 1 part Aldi tomato ketchup), then pull out all the stops with Lidl Wine-Flavoured Drink (must be served at 7–8⁰C in hock glasses), plus a mouthwatering tin of Costcutter cling peaches with the top of the milk poured over (homogenized no good).

FAVOURITE ANIMALS: Sloths – they have things figured out. Or seahorses – they know the secrets of the sea. I'm scared of dinosaurs, though.

FAVOURITE MAGAZINE: TV QUICK – a triumph of journalism, a treasurehouse of bite-sized chunks of pure TV fact, steering the timid reader on a rollercoaster ride through the complex world of TV scheduling. It's changed my life.

FAVOURITE THING: Being in love.

About his ideal match

How can anyone say for certain until they actually meet a particular person?

I know some folks write at great length here about the person they hope to meet, laying down guidelines about their looks and values, habits and tastes, the places they go, the kind of shoes they should wear or avoid, even the charming sort of things they might say on a date ...

But I suspect real life doesn't always arrive quite so neatly packaged. In other words, I'm not adverse to being surprised. Given the choice, I'd rather meet someone from whom I might learn something.

That said, I haven't exactly narrowed the field, have I?

OK, I'd like to meet a fun, intelligent, attractive woman for friendship or relationship. Intelligence doesn't have to mean academia, and interests don't have to be identical, but she must at least have a sense of humour (e.g. I don't really ply dinner guests with fictitious tinned puddings and ersatz soup ...).

In broad terms she'd be the sort of person who'd never steal acorns from a blind pig. And somehow I doubt if she'd behave like those passionate folks do at the Black Friday sales, everyone in such dire need of a new smartphone that they'll fight on the floor like a sailor to get one.

That said, I'd be first into the fray were it sparked off by a special two-for-one offer on Costcutter tinned suet pudding, each tinned pudding smothered in golden syrup thick and lucent as liquid amber, the richest suet suffused with nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon, the fragrant hints of distant lands: "Mmmm, pinch me ... am I in SW11 or the Spice Islands?"

On second thoughts, we've been down that road already. So enough of these reveries of nauseating tinned puddings you won't actually find in the shops. I'll return the can-opener to the kitchen drawer, and get back to the business in hand.

At the end of the day, I'd much rather stand in a puddle in freezing January rain with someone lovely than eat crêpes suzette at Claridge's with someone I didn't care for at all.
