In His Own Words

About him

I'm OK, a safe bet. I just spent thirty five years with an absolute darling who had me pretty well house trained. I lost her after we fought and lost a valiant fourteen year battle against cancer.

But I can't just fold under an avalanche of grief; that's not fair to our kids and grandchildren, the rest of my/our family and friends, or to me, even.

I'm looking forward to a time when I don't burst into tears so much - but my sweetheart would not countenance an introverted, miserable Joe. She didn't want to go, didn't want to leave us at all, and she'd hate to think I just abandoned the rest of my life because I couldn't come to terms with a cruel accident of fate.

Look at our family business website, [removed] it'll give you a bit of an insight into what we do and have been doing for the last twenty years or so, and you should be able to extrapolate from that what we, a close family, are like.

Right now is not a good time to expect to get much of a carefully thought out and defensible 'outlook on life' from me. But I'm not a quitter; if Thea's up there somewhere and can see what's going on down here I fervently hope she'd be as proud of us in death as she was in life.

About his ideal match

I can't describe my ideal match any more than I could have told you, five minutes before I first saw her, what my delicious and in very way delightful Thea would be like. It took us many years and a bundle of shared experiences to get to be where we were when she died - we made each other what we were. We ended up being more than the sum of the parts, which was a wonderful place to be.

It's a place I'd like to be again, who knows how the next chapter will unfold?

Moving on is going to be incredibly difficult - but my dear, precious sweetheart was so weak when she died she couldn't quite make it to the clinic we were traveling to that might have given her a few more years. She died in my arms in the hospital car as I murmured sweet nothings to her and tried to encourage her either to keep strong for another hour or two so we could start making her better, or to go on to her eternal life free and happy and joyful and without regret.

I hope and believe she is currently dancing with the Lord, but can't really know how that works. What I know without doubt is that she has gone from this life, and I will never again be able to hold her hand, smother her with kisses or gently and sensually stroke the nape of her neck.

Moving on from this place of great emptiness and loss isn't going to be easy, but it has to be done, I reckon, and having spent so many years with such a delicious companion, lover and best friend, I have no will to do the next part of life's journey alone.
