In His Own Words

About him

I am told that I am intelligent, humorous and good company.

Like George Clooney, I am going grey. In all honesty, this is the only justifiable way that I could get the phrase 'like George Clooney' into my profile.

I serve on the board of a couple of charities and enjoy the opportunity to contribute to their work.

I still see myself as being on the left, in terms of my politics and definitely more Benn than Blair.

I try to see the humour in most things, but am conscious that some things need to be treated completely seriously.

Likes
Music (blues, soul, rock, classical), rugby, football, real ale, curry, crime fiction, sunny days and starry nights and good conversations.

I also generally appreciate people with passion and enthusiasm for the things they believe in and the courage of their convictions to speak out for them.

I really enjoy watching my son playing rugby for the local club's junior colts team and standing on the touchline with the other dads, bemoaning how it was "better in our day".

I like to go out with friends, sit in a country pub and sup a few pints whilst putting the world to rights. However, I don't know why we bother, because by the following morning someone has always messed it up again.

I like quick witted, 'off the wall' takes on situations. I know that the seemingly impromptu witty badinage on TV shows has probably been worked on for hours by a small army of script writers, and also like well scripted comedy (current favourite - 'The Big Bang Theory').

Dislikes
Thoughtlessness, mayonnaise and people who whinge.

I hate and reject bigots immediately (I find it saves time)

Unctuous and overt displays of supposed sincerity sets my teeth on edge and I think that those people who appear to have had their senses of humour surgically removed are the black holes of socialising.

That is an awful lot of sentences beginning with 'I', but I suppose the invitation to 'Tell us a bit about yourself' is an opportunity to blow one's own trumpet !

About his ideal match

I value honesty and integrity above convenient popularity and would hope that any partner would share these priorities.

I would like to meet someone who can initiate and maintain an intelligent conversation and who values their individuality and independence. I'd like to be able to share in some of their interests, even if these are new and strange to me. However, I really can't see myself sky-diving or attending meetings of the David Cameron Appreciation Society. By the same token, I would hope that a partner would be prepared to come along on some of the things I like. Football/rugby, beer, blues music and a curry - what's not to like ? All that said, I think mature people will maintain their own interests and not expect others to necessarily share their enthusiasms.

Having looked at several other profiles, it seems that it would be the kiss of death for anyone to suggest that they were not regularly tramping hill and dale. So I am going to say that I whilst I do own a pair of walking boots and a day-pack and quite like walking, I also have to admit that I am an ambler rather than rambler these days.

My worst nightmare involves me being pursued by Davina McCall and David Cameron, toting machine-guns and insisting upon sharing with me their empathy and sincerity, whilst talking to me as if my dog has just died* (Head tilts to one side - "Ah, never mind, I'm Davina/David, let the very proximity of my fame and celebrity ease some of the pain. You know, I was once not famous, just like you, but I am now, so that's great.") Whilst this has actually only happened twice, I would need written assurances from a partner that, should this set of circumstances ever happen again, she would promptly intervene and head them off, perhaps by directing them towards the nearest film crew.
*Incidentally, I don't have a dog, alive or dead.

Oh yes, non-smokers only, I'm afraid.
