In His Own Words

About him

I am a middle aged probably slightly Asperger's male who would like to live the next 20 years of my life in a somewhat unconventional way. Not for me those cosy wine fuelled cuddles on sofas or DVD's by wood fires. For the moment I am like many others, a wage slave but I am already contemplating retirement and this may occur as early as 2 years time if my contract isn't renewed, or it may happen in 6 years time if it is. I sold my house and have no intention of buying another. I would prefer to travel and to spend extended periods living in other countries. Perhaps Spain or France or maybe somewhere more exotic. I also intend to tour Australia and NZ extensively and would also like to do something way off beat, such as very long distance walks or cycles and would like to go Oz without flying. Just because.
Since separating in 1998, I have dabbled with relationships and found I often preferred being alone and have been contentedly single for the last 5 years. I can't pretend I find relationships easy and I might be a bit of a challenge to get to know well. So it's pretty handy living on an island. I come back to England often and see my daughter as often as possible and we are close, though she is at University and leads her own life now.
I like to read and to write and would love to write for publication though I have only recently had the time. I am not especially sociable, but play tennis and go for a few beers now and then. Mostly I am happy at home and don't mind solitude. I know this sounds a bit weird to many people who think that friends and parties are the only things that matter but I'm not great in large groups. I'm also teaching myself guitar but am currently a bit rubbish. I'm a member of my local Rotary, which gets me out a bit as well.
My good points are humour, intelligence, loyalty and honesty and I would truly like to know someone who 'gets' me and doesn't judge or feel neglected when I go inwards.

About his ideal match

My ideal partner will very probably be somewhat unconventional and not afraid of doing different as we head into our autumn years. Settling down near an NHS hospital may be good when we are older, but not yet and to meet someone who isn't afraid to grab life and shake it a bit would be nice. If you like test cricket, that would also be a plus, though it's not mandatory and I'm happy to be ridiculed for my love of it. My perfect partner would probably also be self-contained, independent and not emotionally needy. Other than that, the ability to sustain a conversation, to philosophise sometimes, to not take me too seriously and to enjoy the miracle of life would all tick boxes. I would probably be reluctant to meet quickly.
I have also given thought to doing volunteer development work overseas when I retire, possibly to do with education, especially of girls or possibly disaster relief volunteering. Early days yet, but I am looking into it. If that interests you, at least we will have something to talk about.
