In Her Own Words

About her

It's been quite an exercise assembling what might interest the right person and avoiding all the usual cliches.

My friends would say I am highly articulate, well mannered, intelligent, kind, well read, and passionate about things I believe in. I've been content with the relative quiet I've had out here on the NW Pacific coast, where I have lived for many years. I write, garden, go for good walks in the spectacular scenery - nothing too gung ho though - I'm definitely not the iron woman type, but enjoy making a good effort. I like to appreciate the view, reflect, and my radar is always deployed. I'm a competent cook, very sociable, a loyal and honest friend - and expect the same in return. My home is comfortable and full of books and music - all kinds, including opera. I have written and performed my own work, been published, and read mostly history and literature. I live simply, but like to use beautiful things rather than just looking at them, eat healthily and like a convivial drink (but dislike drunks, smoking and dogs). I listen regularly to BBC Radio 3 and 4 online, prefer the Swedish version of Wallander, read newspapers and generally take an interest in politics and events.

Which brings me to why I want to connect with someone from UK in particular: I find that what is basic and dear to me are all connected with home - humour, conversation, the arts, everything. Canada has been exceptionally good to me. I have friends and family here, had interesting jobs, travelled, a postgraduate degree and have had a happy life here. I'm practical and sensible, cultivated..... love nothing better than a good laugh.....

....but I want to connect on a more visceral basis. All this is all very well, but it would be nice to share ideas, thoughts, absurdities and so forth - and that laugh.

A few salient details: I was born abroad and sent to school in UK - (Cheltenham), followed by art college (Manchester), then to Canada. My family home is near Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire.

About her ideal match

Decency is big with me - honesty, literacy, and definitely a certain sharpness of mind. It doesn't hurt if you're tall and easy on the eyes and clean up nicely, but I look more for kindness and an ability to evaluate and critique the world around you. What else - being able to articulate your thoughts, a sense of curiosity - and a lively imagination. A healthy dose of whimsey, good humour, and a well honed sense of the absurd would be lovely too. Enjoyment of music, literature and history...museums, galleries, theatre if possible....I share all these things, but if you have your own special thing, that's fine too. Good conversation over lovingly prepared food is my idea of a good time - kitchens are equal opportunity spaces in my book. A practical man who knows his way around a tool box wins extra points. No sartorial peacocks or ultra-sports fanatics please, World Cup excepted. Peace and loving civility - yes, and time taken to become friends. That's what's important.

I do hope you're out there somewhere!
