About him
My adult life started as a law undergraduate at Cambridge followed by Sandhurst and the Parachute Regiment. I left the Army after the Falklands War to try my hand at Corporate life. I found corporate life unfulfilling and too political so I set up my own Management Consulting business which I enjoyed for over 25 years and closed it after the sudden death of my wife 9 years ago - we had a wonderfully happy 36 year marriage - a daughter with 2 lovely sons and a son who has just had his first baby daughter. I am determined to complete my PhD at Cambridge in 2024 and submit by year end. I will spend the year writing up and checking references. Then I will await my Viva which will seal my fate. After the undoubted changes I can lodge my final submission - provided I pass! I will then take a long holiday (3 or 4 months) in the sun before returning to my next project which will be turning my thesis into a book. This year I will return to Venice over the New Year. I indulge the quiet romanticism of Venice, the absence of traffic, slow walks along sleepy and mysterious canalways always ending up with a soothing Aperolspritz (or 2) at a favourite wine bar or the welcome escape of a Vivaldi concert in the evening. I love spending time with friends discussing a variety of topics, fun arguments, laughter and weather permitting an enjoyable BBQ. I have adjusted to being a 'lone wolf' which suits my research, but I need friends to provide the vital social balance and the sharing of common interests. I have enjoyed 'being a student again' - sharing moments with young smart people who are kind to me.
About his ideal match
This is difficult! The elusive but critical 'chemistry' is key - and there is no algorithm for that (particularly one designed by the Government). I am looking for a sharp intellect to run alongside and challenge me - not necessarily an academic. I enjoy lively discussion and debate. Someone who is confident in her own skin and has her specific interests, hobbies and ambitions. Respect for each other's differences as there will be some. As a young law student I soon discovered the true value of dissenting judgements.
