In His Own Words

About him

On the ‘Music’ bit, I’m a multi-instrumentalist and did a lot of professional playing, mainly jazz from New Orleans to bebop, at the highest level over the first forty-five years after leaving school. I retired from this scene some years ago after my wife died but I miss making music with others and would like to get back to it on a more casual basis.

Still on music, five years as a boy chorister has stood me in good stead for a place in heaven if there is a God - I was so regular that they made me choir registrar. I have a yearning to do stand-up comedy, mixed with musical performance – where a new partner could participate in one capacity or another.

On the ‘love’ bit, in the past I have undertaken youth football management for the love of my son and founded a full home counties marathon for the love of long-distance running and of mankind. Organising the marathon was totally life-changing for me as a born introvert but it was very rewarding to have affected so many lives in such a positive way.

Educationally, I’ve had the best of both worlds, doing a five-year engineering apprenticeship at a motor car manufacturer and I left this in my mid-twenties on being awarded a mature state scholarship for a university education, where, as well as academic pursuits, I brushed up on my sight-reading on playing chamber and symphonic music and, of course, enveloped the young jazz scene.

On graduation, I was lucky enough to find a very rewarding and satisfying day job as a research scientist, whilst at the same time turning down an offer to turn pro on the music front. These offers continued through my day-job working life but I turned them all down (my father was a pro musician), preferring the security of holiday and sickness pay and an index-linked pension over deserting the family and living out of a suitcase in the wavering gig economy. My goodness, it’s non-existent at the moment!

About his ideal match

With a new friend as a musical participant or even as a roadie/companion, it would be good when the pandemic’s over to get back to playing again, though with less intensity than before and more for fun, doing perhaps village fetes or street corner busking for charity.

I have recently “discovered” the works of singer/song-writer Billy Joel and have set myself the task of re-using my voice for the first time since my chorister days of the 1950s to sing and accompany myself (on the double bass or keyboard) on a dozen of his beautifully-crafted compositions, as diverse as Lullabye and Uptown Girl. Reaching the high notes is a bit of a strain, as Billy himself found as he got older, but I’m up for the challenge or maybe you could help me out in the upper echelons.

As a former marathon runner, I’m keen to maintain fitness levels, though these days it’s simply just walking and at a pace where no-one with me is put under pressure unless they specifically ask for it. Pre-Covid-19 I enjoyed trips to the seaside with my four grandchildren at Frinton-on-Sea, where often time has stood still – I yearn for those days to return.

I look forward to pottering in the garden in the Spring and after the pandemic to welcoming you with a glass of dry white wine, non-alcoholic if you prefer. That could be on your arrival or on our relaxing on getting back from a return ‘Constable’ walk along the banks of the River Stour from my place to Flatford Mill, which is totally cross-country.
