In His Own Words

About him

This is no time to be backward in coming forward....

First impressions of me might be that I’m tall, smiley, polite, and what used to be called well-spoken.

Second impressions might be that I’m warm, friendly, gentle-mannered, calm, and self-confident.

If you came round for coffee and asked an impossible number of questions you might come to know some obvious facts about me: that I’m musical (I’ve had a life-long passion for classical music, first as a pianist, then as a musicologist, and now as a teacher – music is an irreplaceable part of my life), that I’m educated (in life as well, I hope, but I spent a long time at university), that I’ve been a very hands-on parent to my two daughters (now 27 and 29), that I’ve always been interested in all the arts (especially Beethoven, George Eliot, Vermeer), that I've always enjoyed the natural world (long country walks, birds, picking wild fruit, walking a dog - if I had one!), that I’ve never had any ambition to travel (but enjoyed many family holidays), and that I look after my health (mostly running and cycling).

Get to know me a little better and you might get the impression I’m intellectually capable (but far from an intellectual), needing some sort of intellectual life (I don’t think I’ve ever found a replacement for the end of my academic work), fond of children (a very fulfilled parent and very happy to be a teacher), not big on male bonding (I have two brothers, so that’s probably enough for me – I prefer the company of women), not as charitably active as I would like, not as Green as I would like (I’m far more likely to save the smallest of spiders from the Hoover than 'save the planet', though, of course, I'm sensibly Green), a pragmatic socialist (so hoping we can have a Labour government again), very Europhilic (sad to live at a distance from our nearest and dearest), quite a Francophile (beauty of the language, the countryside, family values), quite feminist (but never denying the differences between men and women), and I far prefer depth to breadth.

About his ideal match

Knowing me better still you might think I’m ‘romantic’ (I can be sentimental over even shallow representations of boy+girl), optimistic (maybe nice to live with but it’s better to be realistic), candid and expressive (very willing to let my feelings show), quietly opinionated (but always liking to be contradicted and challenged), caring and kind, emotionally intelligent (at least I've always been interested in how people and relationships work), quite an extreme Myers Briggs INFJ, and fundamentally serious (though always wanting to live life with light touch and see all the humour in everyday life).

And in a relationship I would describe myself as loving, emotionally robust, sensitive, honest, loyal, reliable, responsible, attentive, thoughtful, confessional and easily intimate, maybe quite intense, very sympathetic and supportive, a bit stubborn, organised, a bit lacking in spontaneity, naturally a bit indoorsy (because my interests are there, but I would go anywhere to please!), physically demonstrative, very cuddly (it’s state of mind!), physical, sensual, playful; a lovely boyfriend (but perhaps even better as a husband).

* * *

Who or what am I looking for? In a word – intimacy; feeling together in every way. Physical intimacy. Mental intimacy - really knowing and really being known; sharing not only life but oneself. And emotional intimacy, which might be another way of saying love. Someone to build a ship with, one that would not only give us a wonderful view of the sun on the sea but carry us through life's rough waters.

* * *

I spend a great deal of my spare time playing the piano or harpsichord and reading, but these are such good friends that they don’t mind at all when I neglect them.

My marriage ended in 2010; divorced in 2013

My beard comes and goes. You choose!
