About him
Think Shrek, but with more hair and not such a bright shade of green. I have my flaws and eccentricities, but hey, there's a lot more to ogres than people think. Ogres are like onions. We have layers! I think I am affectionate, sensitive, considerate, sincere, faithful and humorous, sometimes reserved, but at times can be quite direct.
I think I am practical, analytical, scientific and objective. I am interested in science generally, nature and the environment . I trained as a geologist, and did postgrad research on geological development of major mountain ranges, involving 18 months fieldwork in western Turkey. No longer in academia, in my spare time I continue to analyse my findings and one day will complete my PhD thesis. I would like to return to Turkey to continue studying the geology there, and to go to Senegal, the Himalayas and Papua to do the same. My other passion is meteorology, especially thunderstorms and severe weather.
I am outdoorsy and enjoy, mountain biking, hiking and camping in the Scottish Highlands, Wales and Lakes. I ride daily to keep fit and to work, as I don't currently own a car (but I do own a number (!) of Cannondale MTBs).
All said, I have not had much leisure time until recently as I have been caring for an elderly parent. Hobbies and scientific interests had to be put on hold and I have been forced to find less glamorous local employment.

Scandinavian crime noire (the Bridge, Wallander etc), sci-fi, cheeses, pasta, curry, cats. Music: Eagles, Runrig, Vangelis, Big Country, country and andean. Movies: the Martian (hence username), The Flight of the Pheonix (Jimmy Stewart original), A Beautiful Mind, The Imitation Game, Goodwill Hunting, the Bournes and the Star Wars series.
I am based in the Oxfordshire Chilterns, but have ambitions to relocate to the Scottish Highlands, maybe the Inverness area, where there are mountains and interesting geology. But am willing to consider alternatives.
