About him
Travel to Sri Lanka? Trek in remote Nepal? Sail the rugged coastline of Croatia? Or walk the SW Coast Path and then come back to a glass of wine by an open fire?
It’s all more enjoyable with a companion, somebody who can laugh with me at Merton and Hislop in HIGN4Y, read the Sunday papers over breakfast and explore the menu in a good restaurant nearby.
My home is in Plymouth, ten minutes from the sea and Dartmoor, and my three children grew up here and like me they love both. My wife Rosemary died here after 35 great years.
And now, more than 11 years on? I spend time in Nepal, I sail , I walk and when the weather allows I go to the beach and swim here in Devon.
On my desert island I’ll have Mozart and John Denver along with a set of Jane Austen novels and I’ll enjoy swimming naked in the tropical sea … for a while. If your island is close by I’ll swim over.

So I've swum over ... and we're getting to know each other.
You like the idea of travel – a mix of back-packing and comfortable beach hotels, but certainly not in an organised group. If like me you are widowed we will find it easier to understand what we have each been through. You’re not sure what sort of partnership might develop, but you have enthusiasm and the time to explore possibilities.
Even if you’ve never done much sailing you like the idea – perhaps starting with a day sail from Plymouth and later considering a charter boat for a week or two in the Mediterranean. Going on a cruise with me is certainly not something that involves boarding a large ship with swimming-pools. We swim off the stern at anchor in an empty bay.
We'll learn from each other's taste in music, books, films, TV and theatre, and it will be good if there is some overlap. I have special places I'd like to go back to (Madagascar, Zanzibar, Vietnam, Laos, Galapagos) and new places I'd want you to travel to with me (Sri Lanka, the Andaman Islands, Sao Tome, for example). I'm maybe older than you were thinking of in a possible soulmate - but I think you'd be pleasantly surprised at my outlook, even (dare I say it?) my appearance. I do a ParkRun every Saturday (just under 37 minutes) and yoga with U3A.
You have a good sense of fun, a readiness to try foreign cuisine, an intelligent interest in current affairs especially about low-income countries, and you’ve considered volunteering – or already do this.
And while we've been talking we've walked around the island, and look, a yacht has drifted ashore.
