About him
I am fascinated by the presence of the past and have chosen to live on a site saturated in antiquity. I am a Romantic, but not of the flowers and chocolates variety, as my gifts involve a certain sensibility for the sublime and uncanny.
I have spent my youth in the service of others and still retain a curiosity about individuals but probably no longer do well in crowds. I have had an extraordinary and colourful career, measured against which the quotidien appears rather beige. I have not sought wealth and so I am not wealthy.
I have a public school accent which makes me sound posher and richer than I am. I never judge others on how they sound but rather on what they have to say about themselves.
I live on my own and admit to a certain aloneness. It would be good to find a friend for some mutuality, but I am not yet desperate.
My house is overflowing with books, and I presume to write, but only for my own pleasure.
While I understand entirely why some ladies on these sites adopt a "love me, love my dogs, children, grandchildren" approach to seeking a friend, I do not want to be taken for walks or assimilated into someone else's family life. Sorry about that.
I have a car and a train, both at my disposal, but I would rather not travel all day to meet up with you.

She would have to love books and reading, and talking and sharing experiences.
She would have to forgive me my trespasses, and try not to knock me into any shape other than my own.
She would have to take herself as seriously as I hope she would take me.
She would need to understand what it means to be alone in the presence of the other.
She might also be able to comprehend what a joy it is to be hidden and what a disaster it is not to be found.
She would need to be as available as I am to be sought for, and to wish as much as I for the intimacy of finding each other.
Above all she would need to have a good sense of humour so that she can laugh at all these ridiculous expectations of mine.
I am intrigued by 'Positivity Resonance Theory', which says that sharing positive experiences can be good for the health of those involved, as it raises Cortisol levels. This sounds like common sense, but it does imply that people who use this site might have to think harder about what kind of positive experiences they wish to share and to be more discriminating about the capacity of their 'date' to resonate and be in emotional synchrony with them. So instead of trying to get a 'match' based on choice of leisure activities, we might have to think harder about matching capacity for resonance.
