In His Own Words

About him

Am kind, generous, tolerant, gentle, sometimes romantic, and definitely not macho, but I would say that, wouldn`t I? Am a normally imperfect human being, fairly self-critical, with many faults and weaknesses, including nodding off in lectures, having too many opinions and liking order but acquiring clutter. See no contradiction between being serious-minded and not taking life too seriously. My children say I am eccentric.

Love walking and am a regular walker. Try to walk at least twice a week, anything from c7 miles to c27 miles. Also walking abroad, chiefly Europe and north Africa - most recently (2016) India (Kerala /Tamil Nadu) and Italy (Dolomites). Am I protesting too much? Of course I am, but I want to stress that I am active for my age and in good health.

Enjoy (not in order of importance) museums & galleries; theatre & opera; classical music (& some other kinds); helping to make a few organisations work better (in which I have discovered that age, and indifference to reward and the ability to draw on experience that goes with it, can be an advantage); reading & writing; my children and grandchildren. Serious interest in older British ceramics & modern studio ceramics. Intermittent voluntary work, mostly connected with education and my former working life, up to two days a week. Guardian reader & Radio 3 and 4 listener. Watching bad TV. Was a university teacher for 35+ years.

Happy about how I look? Not sure - while walking in Dolomites last July had bad fall and was lucky to survive, and as a result lost three inches in height (it`s a long story), probably permanently, so advertised height is now wrong and haven`t yet got used to transformation from old man into little old man. Details about being active, in good health, etc are still true. Hair (what`s left of it) almost white & cut short. Have worn full beard, trimmed short, since 1999.

About his ideal match

You are an active person and have many interests, including some that we could share. You have a lively and independent mind. Age has given you some wisdom, tolerance, self-knowledge and plenty of baggage. Most of the time you delight in being alive, have a generally optimistic outlook on life, and welcome new experiences. You are probably very different from me.

I have tried to be honest in describing the sort of person I am and the sort of person I would like to meet. I have found most of the questions with a limited range of precoded responses impossible to answer in a way that captured anything like the truth. it is all too easy to fall into the "imperfect man seeks perfect woman" trap, so please make allowances. I hope I have not, for instance, given the impression that I expect you (unlike me) never to be disorganized, never to have doubts, never to waste time, and to show none of the signs of ageing.

What kind of relationship am I looking for? I am well settled where I am, and am not keen to move to another part of Britain. My ideal long-term relationship would have us doing things together, with each spending time in the other`s place, but also spending time on our own. And the shorter the distance between us the better! But I may be wrong - the unexpected can happen - and perhaps in a year`s time I`ll be living in Edinburgh or Bristol or Manchester or somewhere I had never heard of.
