In Her Own Words

About her

I think the hardest part of this -- even for a writer -- is trying to sound remotely unique. Galleries, travel, wine and food -- are all great of course, but here's a few pointless trivia bits about me that the questionnaire didn't cover: 1. I drive a 1966 convertible Morris Minor given to me by a friend 10 years ago. 2. I find browsing DIY shops strangely addicting. 3. I run (but you don't have to). 4. I like going to the theatre and the odd literary festival (yes, you have to).

I don't know if that helps any at all. In the more usual vein, I'm a divorced mother of 7 year old twins. I worked for years in journalism, most recently as a senior writer at Time magazine in London covering the business side of luxury goods industry. Post twins, I wrote three books and am now working on fashion-based internet start up. I have a live-in au pair so remain fairly social in the evenings. I'm fortunate to have a large group of diverse friends. I do love a glass of champagne in the fumoir of Claridges, but I have also been known to get very excited about camping at a vintage sports car rally in Wales. I'll try most things once, and am pretty good at being able to make conversation with just about anyone.

I think online dating is disturbingly like ordering from a take-away menu and find it somewhat disconcerting that men I've been very fond of in the past would have failed in several criteria that i have just marked as really important. Meeting up seems to be the best way to get a real idea of someone's character and, if all else fails, I may be able to introduce you to a better-suited friend.

About her ideal match

I have a wide range of friends from poets to bankers and would like a partner who could mix well with all of them -- or at least just be polite during a dinner. I don't 't mind sarcasm and much prefer it to no sense of humor at all. I like to surround myself with people who follow politics and world events, in part because it means I can learn from them rather than have to follow it myself. (Malcolm Gladwell once wrote an article about how we store information in other people's brains, which I latched upon to justify this.) Most of my boyfriends where smarter than me in this regard and I'm not too proud to admit it. Potential partners looking for a woman to go with them raving would be better off looking elsewhere. I run, but you don't have to.

I know that "smart" and "funny" are the most overused words women use to describe their ideal man, but yet, there they are.
