In His Own Words

About him

Hello there! I am verbose, loyal, compassionate and thoughtful. And verbose. Following a few decidedly careless owners, I am looking for someone reliable. I've met a few admirable people in recent years, but no-one yet to share a life with. And I am nowhere near as humourless as that intro instantly makes me sound. I like to think of myself as just averagely humourless, with flashes of manic hysteria.

Professionally, I have returned to university administration after going to get my PhD (awarded last year). One way or another I've been involved in higher education for thirty years, and I am passionate about it both constitutionally and academically. For some reason I am presently approaching yet another degree. I work from home, also building self-employed projects. Those now centre on developing a website for my academic witterings.

I own my house, which is bursting with books, music and films. (It used to have cats as well, but over time they went away and it would have been unkind to get more because I started travelling a lot.) The books, music and films are my work, turning interest into profitable activity. When time allows, I do things like refurbishing computers. I've built my own PCs for about twenty years, and I'm interested in robotics. For a humanities guy, I'm also something of an Ubergeek.

I sometimes teach film at university, and I'm working on writing a couple of books: another thread of my absurdly multidimensional business plan! Yet another is possibly training university applicants for a special exam that some institutions use.

I'm athletic. Living for over twenty years in a town built for driving, I still resolutely cycle everywhere and I have taken to doing the annual London-to-Brighton ride for the British Heart Foundation. I want to get back to windsurfing, having lapsed for three years.

Otherwise I spend my time struggling to keep these penguins under control, and trying to work out how to get out of Narnia without the giant pixies detecting the sound of my tractor.

About his ideal match

I am looking for someone to mingle lives with. For the right person, I am in a position to move to pretty much wherever such mingling should occur.

You will, I hope, be intelligent, funny and sexy. Perhaps we already have activities and pastimes in common, but in any case I would like to discover your interests and share mine with you.

Liveliness is important, in a balance between spontaneity and reliability. I have found myself unhappy dealing with someone organised to the point of rigidity, or with someone unpredictable to a degree that is simply inconsiderate. There must be something flexible but also responsible in between!

It would be instantly convenient if you enjoy eating out and things like a variety of concerts, museums and films. On the other hand it would also be splendid if you could add interesting new dimensions to my own activities. Nights out sharing new stuff, and nights in sharing old stuff, are both good.

I'm not a snob about presentation, although I am drawn to women who present with some degree of forethought. Shabby-casual can be charming. Wino chic is not.

More than anything else I am still seeking someone with emotional substance and courage. I've been looking for a while, but haven't given up. I am not stupid enough to demand a lack of 'baggage': if you can get to this age with no baggage then you probably haven't been doing enough. I want to share support, joy and discovery with someone genuinely brave enough to be equally honest and steadfast.
